The effect of cultural changes on these characteristics has also been studied. The four small catchments comprising the Taita IHD Experiment Basin are part of the Taita Experimental Station, which was established in 1948 to provide a site for the headquarters of the New Zealand soil Bureau, and was devised to provide a field experimental area where a wide range of fundamental soil and plant problems could be studied on a long term basis. Here study is carried out on the effects of farming and forestry practices on the soil, on the investigation of water and mineral cycles, and on the role of weathering and erosion in soil development. Taita Experimental Station is situated on the hills to the east of the Hutt Valley, about 15 miles north-east of Wellington. It consists of 220 acres of mainly steep or hilly land. The man soils are central yellow-brown earths and related steepland soils derived from weathered greywacke.
