Preface -- 1. Introduction -- 2. Ecological gradients: fronts and the pycnocline -- 3. Physical forcing of biological processes -- 4. Biomes: primary compartments in ecological oceanography -- 5. Oceans, seas and provinces: the secondary compartments -- 6. Temporal variability and the adjustment of boundaries -- 7. The Atlantic Ocean -- 8. The Indian Ocean -- 9. The Pacific Ocean -- 10. The Southern Ocean -- Bibliography -- Index.
Summary: "Although they cover two-thirds of the globe, surprisingly little is known of the large-scale biological and ecological geography of the oceans. This is especially astonishing because a great quantity of region-specific data have been gathered. Ecological Geography of the Sea synthesizes these locally restricted studies to generate a global geography for this vast marine world. Based in part on global patterns of algal ecology, the book divides the oceans into four primary biomes and then subdivides these into secondary compartments. Secondary compartments are identified and characterized by biogeochemical features including nutrient dynamics, continental shelf topography, and algal blooms. Because this ocean-wide regional classification has such broad impact on the way oceanographers and ecologists study ocean patterns, this book will have wide and long-term appeal." - Back cover.
