There is emphasis on physical habitat requirements, such as water flow and depth, because the effects of chemical parameters on fish have been adequately covered in other publications. The review attempts to distinguish areas of general agreement or differences of opinion regarding the effects of various habitat requirements, and points out that because the effects are complex and interactive, generalisations need to be applied with caution. It is intended that the review serve as an interim source of information for water resource managers, until such time as a more comprehensive summary is available, and that the review also act as a stimulus for the research needed to complement and broaden existing knowledge.
