Hydrological research annual reportReview: The Ministry of Works has established a network of experimental basins to study the hydrological characteristics of important soil-vegetation complexes of New Zealand. The effect of cultural changes on these characteristics has also been studied. The Otutira Basin is situated on the north-shore of Lake Taupo, 14 miles west of Taupo and 20 miles south of Mangakino. The Basin has an area of 741 acres and discharges into Kawakawa Bay. The objects of the project were: to carry out research to aid in understanding natural hydrological process on soil-vegetation complexes - yellow-brown pumice soils/scrub, and yellow-brown pumice soils/introduced grasses; to find the effect of a change in land use (scrub versus introduced grasses) on the hydrological regimen; to provide data for a mathematical model of catchments for the generation of information on the effect of land use and/or land management on the hydrology of typical soil-vegetation complexes; to improve techniques of observing and/or analysing data.
