N2  - This paper was presented to the Technical Group on Water Symposium, NZIE, Annual Conference, Hamilton, February 1978. Water quality surveys carried out by the Ministry of Works and Development on the Waikato river since 1969 have included measurement of dissolved oxygen (DO) and oxygen demand. It has been found that significant diurnal and seasonal variations of DO and oxygen demand occur. Furthermore, such variations in DO cannot be accounted for solely by variations in biochemical oxygen demand over the same cycles. The nature and causes of these variations are discussed. Some further details of the data collected are presented
