Corals were sampled within the lagoon (-1 to -5m, except at Blue Bay where lagoon depth is down to 8m), at reef crests (-0.5 to -1m), channel slopes (-3 to -15m) and outer reef slopes (-3 to -25m) at various locations around the island. A total of 150 hermatypic coral species from 16 families and 43 genera are described. Twenty-one species are new records for Mauritius, of which ten species are new to the Western Indian Ocean and one new to the Indo-Pacific. The scientific names under each family heading are organised in alphabetical order. Each species in the guide is treated under the following headings: Description, Habitat, Abundance and Distribution. In addition, a brief description of 4 azooxanthellate or ahermatypic corals is included. The guide provides a friendly user key to species level identification. We have minimised the use of technical terms as far as possible but use of some of the technical jargon was sometimes unavoidable. However, we have tried to explain some of the terms by means of diagrams and photographs. We have also included brief notes on coral biology, ecology and geological history of reefs of Mauritius and hope that users of this guide will find these helpful. Although the guide contains photographs and descriptions of more than 160 coral species, it does not pretend to be exhaustive. We have tried to be simple and accurate in the descriptions, but a few errors may still be present and are solely the responsibilities of the authors. Notification of any mistake and supplementary information would be most welcomed. -- Preface by the authors: Ruby Moothien Pillay, Hiroaki Terahima, Atmanun Venkatasami, Hiro'omi Uchida, September 2002 ER -
