A simulation study was conducted to investigate the performance of the statistical approaches applied to derive standardised CPUE indices from the catch and effort data reported from multi-species trawl fisheries. The study concluded that two-stage (hurdle) models generally provided the most reliable indices of abundance. Guidelines are provided for the analysis of catch and effort data sets.
