The discovery, in the Southwest Pacific, of hydrothermal vents associated with the spreading axis of the East Pacific Rise (EPR) led to a comparative study of the occurrence of these manifestations in two different geodynamic settings, the Mid-Oceanic Ridge - Transform fault systems and the extensional processes associated with the opening of Back-Arc Basins. The relative similarities which have been observed between these two environments have led to an in depth study of the functioning of Back-Arc Basin's spreading centres and the manifestations of their associated hydrothermal activity.
