The main purpose of this visit was to attend the Annual Meeting of the Australian Microbiology Society meeting in Hobart. I had been invited to give a keynote paper to the Mycorrhizal Symposium at this meeting. I also welcomed the opportunity to discuss some of the recent Australian work on mycorrhizas with participants. These discussions as far as I was concerned, turned out to be the most useful part of the visit. A feature of the conference was the participation of people representing government bodies and private industry. Their function seemed to be primarily the assessment of microbiological research with a view to future funding of appropriate projects
