Late Oligocene-early Miocene Gore Lignite Measures and associated marine and estuarine deposits cover several thousand square kilometres of eastern and northern Southland. the more common and stratigraphically significant spores and pollen obtained from many drillhole and surface sections within these deposits are described in this bulletin. Five new genera are described and 68 species considered. The new genera are <Luminidites>, <Glencopollis>, <Dicrassopollis>, <Lateropora> and <Bluffopollis>. Thirty new species are described. These are <Dictyophyllidites arcuatus, Foveotriletes verrucosus, Polypodiisporites irregularis, P. radiatus, Podocarpidites regulatus, `Assamiapollenites' incognitus, Nupharipollis mortonensis, Tricolpites perlongicolpus, Glencopollis ornatus, Lymingtonia cenozoica, Anisotricolporites truncatus, Canthiumidites oblatus, Dicrassipollis balteus, Gothanipollis perplexus, Iexpollenites verrucatus, Margocolporites scabratus, Nuxpollenites varicosus, Rhoipites aralioides, R. retiformis, `R.' triangulatus, Tetracolporopollenites costatus, Tetracolporites spectabilis, Latroptera glabra, Diporites aspis, Bluffopollis maculatus, Proteacidites nexinus, P. rectus, P. stratosus,> and <Harrisipollenites kapukaensis>. In addition <Harrisipollenites> Mildenhall & Crosbie, <Monogemmites> Krutzsch, <Margocolporites> Ramanujam and <Tetracolporites> Couper are emended. Seven species are recombined, and revised descriptions are given for seven others. Four new biostratigraphic zones are recognised, based on the ranges of a number of taxa described herein. In upward sequence the zones are: the Upper <Nothfagidites matauraensis> Zone, <Rhoipites waimumuensis> Zone, <Poteacidites isopogiformis> Zone and the <Tricolpites latispiosus> Zone. The late Eocene <Nothofagus matauraensis> Zone of Couper is renamed the Lower <Nothofagidites matauraensis> Zone and is redefined to include the early to middle Oligocene. (auth)
