This document is a summary of the 1980 Ambient Water Quality Criteria reports published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Reports have been published for 64 of the 65 "priority toxic pollutants" and for many of these pollutants the EPA has derived ambient water quality criteria to protect aquatic and human life. The purpose of this document is to make this information available to those concerned with the protection and use of water in New Zealand. For each pollutant, some relevant uses and chemical, physical and environmental properties are given. The Criteria sections derived by the EPA are reproduced largely verbatim, but annotated for clarity and ease of use where appropriate
