The history of aquatic macrophytes in Lake Whangape since 1969 is reviewed. Major changes in the catchment, with the introduction of pastoral farming, have affected the hydrology and water quality of the lake and little remains of the native macrophyte communities due to the introduction of invasive exotic macrophytes and possibly the browsing activities of introduced wildfowl.
