This project addresses the need for research into benthic oxygen demand exertion rates in New Zealand rivers by application of in situ chamber and laboratory methods. The effect of velocity of water flow, dissolved oxygen concentration and sediment type on the rate of exertion of oxygen demand will be measured. Measurements of microbial biomass and metabolic activity are being made. Results to date are summarised in this progress report.
