Summary: This report summarises the investigations of the Tarawera River undertaken over the past twenty five years aimed at assessing the "health" of the River by examining the health and distribution of the plants and animals principally in the mainstream of the river but also throughout the catchment. These investigations, which have been undertaken by Auckland University, Bioresearches, Environment BOP and NIWA, have examined the factors that control the development of the aquatic plants and animals in the river and assessed whether the discharges from the pulp and paper mills, in particular the discharges from the Carter Holt Harvey Tissue Mill at Kawerau, significantly affected the overall health of the river.
