This is the expanded edition of the original 2nd edition, entitled Antarctic krill and structure of plankton community in its area.
Includes bibliographical references.
The book gives details of a longterm (1973-1986) complex monitoring of pelagic ecosystem having been conducted under the supervision of Prof . Ernest Z. Samyshev in the Sea of Commonwealth and the adjacent sea waters. Never before the study of such spatial and temporal scope had been done in the word. A number of Soviet research vessels were involved to provide fulfilment of the programme. Data of the field and experimental studies underlie the analysis of major structural and functional characteristics inherent in the Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, and some other living components of planktonic community in the distribution area; to make the examination more complete, relevant data having been obtained for the Atlantic sector of Antarctic are also cited. This edition is the translated into English original book in Russian published in 1991; the latter lacks Chapter VI because of the editional page limitations. The English version of the monograph is addressed primarily to the experts, researchers and students abroad whose interests and ambitions focus on the topic under discussion.
