"The purpose of this investigation was to discover how much new data is available (i) for all the existing charts greater than 20 years old and, (ii) for those charts which have never been published. The results of this investigation will aid infonned decision making regarding chart production. The data presented in this report are only that collected by the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute (NZOI) on the RV Tangaroa and RV Rapuhia. However, it is pertinent to remember that, under the GEBCO arrangement, NZOI has access to the hydrographic data collected by the Royal New Zealand Navy. The Navy has recently updated several key areas in the major shipping routes around New Zealand, for example; Foveaux Strait, Cook Strait and the approaches to Auckland."--[p.1].
