Participants were researchers who are likely to form the nucleus of such research in the new Crown Research Institute of Atmosphere and Water which will be formed on 1 July 1992. All the themes are complementary, and some are closely related. One principal theme is identified to form the basis of a river ecology programme for the next few years. This theme -'Source to Sea' - covers changes in rivers from their source to the sea, key processes causing natural change, and the influence of man-induced change. A number of studies will need to be carried out in areas other than the primary programme to meet specific requirements for information in the future. However, the framework of themes will enable the relevance of these other studies to an overall programme to be clearly identifiable. This will greatly assist co-ordination and collaboration in the future, and provide for a structured programme of activities to be presented to the Foundation for Research Science and Technology for 1992/93 funding. This report consists of the present summary, an executive summary of the workshop and subsequent discussions amongst the researchers and details of the seven themes identified at the workshop.
