Summary: The early botanical collections from the icy Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic waters were mainly made by European investigators. Consequently, most authentic algal specimens are shown in European Herbaria. Therefore, non-European investigators cannot easily consult these taxonomically most valuable algae. The author of this volume, himself partaker of three South Polar expeditions, visited European Herbaria and took photographs of the preserved authentic algae including the original labels. These photographs enable students and botanical, systematical and environmental researchers to study the morphology of brown algae from the most southern marine flora.
