history: On 1 Nov. 1989 the functions of Aorangi United Council, North Canterbury Catchment Board and Regional Water Board (Christchurch, N.Z.) and South Canterbury Catchment Board and Regional Water Board (Timaru, N.Z.), and, some of the functions of Canterbury United Council (Christchurch, N.Z.) and Coastal-North Otago United Council were taken over by the Canterbury Regional Council (Christchurch, N.Z.).
