| Summary, etc | Beach changes along the Bay of Plenty coast have been established by resurveying cross sections which were established in 1977. The results show continuing progradation in the less of Whale Island and between Matata and Otamarakau. All other parts of the coast are either static or eroding. No general cause for the erosion can be established. Changes in sediment supply or the presence of rhythmic offshore topography may be responsible for some of the changes. The reversal of the historic trend for progradation along the Rangitaiki Plains coast, may enhance any coastal erosion which may be associated with the land subsidence caused by the earthquake of 2 March 1987. |
