Phosphorus and inorganic nitrogen data collected from the Purukohukohu experimental basin between 1972 and 1979 are examined. There was a pronounced seasonal and flow-related variation of nitrate concentrations in all three catchments. Mean annual nitrate concentrations in Puriki, which was converted from pasture to pines in 1973, have declined from 150 mg.m-3 in 1972 to approximately 130 mg.m-3 in 1979.
