Ten weeks after the Tasman Mill shutdown, the Tarawera river had a DO deficit of 1.2 g/m3 : comparable with that measured during the 1983 shutdown, but 1.0 g/m3 greater than predicted by the GUM model for the small measured BOD5 input . Respiration rate of bed sediments below Kawerau averaged only 1/3 of rates measured during normal operation but were still 2-9 times higher than rates measured above Kawerau. It is probable that the river had not adjusted to a new steady-state at the reduced loading even after ten weeks.
