The biomass of smooth orea in the Southland fishery (part of OEO 1 & OEO 3A) was estimated with Bayesian methods using a CASAL age-structured model. This is the second assessment of the stock and used 5 extra years of catch and observer length frequency data compared to the previous (2003) analysis. No fishery-independent data are available for this fishery so inputs for the model included catches, pre- and post-GPS standardised CPUE. and observer length frequency data. Model structure was changed from 2003 to incorporate a split of the data into deep and shallow fisheries because of a strong observed relationship between smaller fish in shallow water and large fish in deeper water.
